There have been numerous times when i have talked to a candidate and they ask why I need to know certain information: So this week I am going to blog about certain questions that recruiters ask candidates during phone screens as well as face to face interviews and why they ask them. These questions are not meant to be rude or invasive but in fact are being asked so we can have a better idea of where you fit in our client pool and what chances you will have obtaining a job through our service. (Keep in mind this is from a third party recruiting standpoint and not from the point of view of someone directly hiring for a position within a company)
SALARY
The first question I will address is : How much money were you making at your last job?
WHY IT SOUNDS INVASIVE: It is a rather personal question that a virtual stranger is asking you. How much money you make in a year. I don’t tell my best friends the answer to this question, why would should tell you?
WHY THE RECRUITER ASKS/ WHY YOU SHOULD ANSWER TRUTHFULLY: There are a few reasons recruiters ask this question: First, because if you were last making $40k a year you probably aren’t qualified for a $120k per year job -It is to find out what type of salary you are qualified to get in your new position and what open jobs they have for you that are in the right ballpark. Secondly when your recruiter is seeking out new clients and trying to find new positions to fill they will be able to pitch you to a hiring manager if you have the right credentials and your last salary was in in line with the open role. This helps the recruiter obtain a new client and hopefully you a new job. The last reason is to start figuring out how much more money they can secure for you in negotiating with the hiring manager and building your career in other roles down the road. Remember: the more money you make, the higher the recruiters commission will be: the recruiters best interests is your best interest as well.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on “Why Recruiters Ask You This.”
