There have been numerous times when I have talked to a candidate and they ask why I need to know certain information: So this week I am going to blog about certain questions that recruiters ask candidates during phone screens as well as face to face interviews and why they ask them. These questions are not meant to be rude or invasive but in fact are being asked so we can have a better idea of where you fit in our client pool and what chances you will have obtaining a job through our service. (Keep in mind this is from a third party recruiting standpoint and not from the point of view of someone directly hiring for a position within a company)
THE JOB DESCRIPTION
This is more of something the recruiter will try to tell you rather than ask you: “Let me tell you about the position…”
WHY YOU DON’T THINK YOU NEED TO HEAR IT: The answer we get a lot from when we try to tell someone about an open position is, “Why can’t you just send me the job description.” You are busy and maybe just want to look over it in your spare time, or maybe you think you will understand the requirements of the role better than the recruiter will.
WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE RECRUITER: When a good recruiter is specialized in the types of positions they are recruiting for, they will know exactly what types of skills are needed to be able to perform the role they are trying to fill; the fact that they called you means you have the skills their client needs. What they want to talk to you about is the specific details and other factors not listed in a job description (written often by another unrelated department). At CTC we work directly with the hiring managers who are responsible for the open position and will probably end up being your future boss. We get information regarding certain skills that may not be listed on the job description, or information on what could make a candidate really stand out, or what type of cultural fit the company is looking for. We also do our due diligence and go and meet with the client face to face and see the office environment for ourselves. So there is a lot of valuable information the recruiter wants to discuss with you about the position to see if you are interested that cannot be found on the job description.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on “Why Recruiters Ask You This.”
