If you are currently freelancing, working remotely, or even unemployed; joining a co-working space can be very beneficial if you are looking for a new job.
Some people can productively work from home with no problem. However myself, and several others like me, enjoy having somewhere else to go to get work done. In college this was the library for me, for some it’s a coffee shop, but a co-working space may be the better choice.
For starters, it gets you out of the house and separates you from several distractions: your DVD collection, your pet, your kids, etc. It puts you in an office environment where you can concentrate and get more work done. If you are unemployed, instead of sitting around watching Jeopardy re-runs all day waiting for the phone to ring; take this time and call into companies. Look to see if they are hiring, speak with HR managers, hiring managers, call different recruiting companies to present your background, and NETWORK.
Co-working Spaces generally have a lot of start-ups using them which generally are starting to expand and need to hire. There are still coffee/lunch breaks and it can be a good time to meet people you otherwise wouldn’t. And, at the very least obtain a referral or reference to point you in the right direction.
Furthermore I have been to a Co-working space named Work Bar in Boston (my favorite that I’ve been to) and I know that they, like many others , have networking events where leaders of companies come to present what they do for business and might mention the fact that they are hiring. In fact, the President of Chase Technology Consultants presented there along with one of our clients, DailyFeats. You can watch a video of his presentation here.
So try it out, you can get more work done, network, and possibly get hired!
Here is a link to several different co-working spaces in the Boston area with break downs by location and cost.
