How to Snag a Job You’ll Love: Show the Real You
Turns out, your mother was right: “Just be yourself” is excellent advice, especially when pursuing job leads. Recent studies have shown that during a job hunt, being genuine actually leads to better long-term job performance and satisfaction.
According to a 2012 study in The Academy of Management Journal, “Striving for Self-Verification during Organizational Entry,” creating a false interview persona can be detrimental to the hiring process and job retention. On the other hand, candidates who opt for “self-verification,” or being authentic and honest, are much more likely to do well in the interview and land a job they love.
The benefits of being yourself
Think the truth might make you come off too quirky? Think again. “Self-verification in pursuing and landing a job leads to improved job satisfaction and job performance without diminishing the chance that the position will be offered in the first place,” notes the study.
This means that being honest about what you’re looking for and what you can and can’t offer is reassuring for potential employers. Understanding if you’re a good fit for the job benefits everyone, including you. By opening up from the beginning, it saves wasted interview time and ensures that you’re primed to excel in any position you’re offered. It’s a win-win.
“Many applicants obviously believe the best strategy is to engage in extensive image creation during organization entry,” says the study. “Our results suggest that in the long term it may be advantageous for people to self-verify during organizational entry, attempting to bring others to know them for who they really are.”
The study goes on to explain the lasting benefits of being straight-forward during the interview process: “Individuals with a strong proclivity to self-verify…were more likely to be satisfied with their jobs and committed to their organizations, and their supervisors rated them as better employees.”
Why it works
But why does self-verification make such a positive difference for job seekers? The study suggests that these benefits are the result of three factors:
- Those who are honest about their abilities and skills are more likely to find work for which they are well-suited and that they can perform as expected.
- Pretending to be something you’re not takes a lot of mental and emotional energy – energy that could otherwise be spent on excelling in your work.
- People who are honest with and about themselves tend to search for jobs with companies that match their ideals and goals. This means they’ll likely have a stronger commitment to the employer and fit in better with the company’s existing culture.
Benefits to hiring companies
These findings are useful to job seekers, certainly. But these studies also offer useful tips for hiring organizations.
High turnover is expensive and disruptive. By going beyond superficial screenings and seeking to get to know candidates – including their strengths, weaknesses, work styles, and personalities – employers can lessen turnover and ensure that new hires are a good fit.
